Description
A Dutch map of Scotland by Joannis Janssonius of Amsterdam and published in his 1628 'Atlas Minor Gerardi Mercatoris'. The map is based on Mercator's map of 1595 but was engraved by Pieter van den Keere and A. Goos. There are stark differences between this and Mercator's map, particularly in the outline of the country and the islands. Landforms are generally narrower, though there are some new promontories, such as along the Ayrshire and Moray coasts. The map is part of the Marischal Collection, named after George Keith, 10th Earl Marischal of Scotland (d. 1778). Originally a Jacobite collection established by the Stuart court in France, it remained there until the National Library of Scotland obtained it in 1978.

A small map of Scotland produced in 1749 by Thomas Jefferys and published in Thomas Salmon's 'A New Geographical and Historical Grammar'. This work went to later editions until 1786, though the map was last included in 1758. Jefferys' map shows the shapes and alignments of Scotland and the islands (especially Lewis) as they were understood before Doret's more exact map of 1750. Hills are inserted imaginatively, usually along shire boundaries which are also indicated by dotted lines. An unusual geese-like formation is apparent east of Barra. Jefferys (1699-1771) was geographer to the Prince of Wales (later George III) as well as a publisher of charts and maps. His works were regarded as both excellent and prolific, particularly those covering North America.

Description
The major portion of this sheet is a hand coloured 'prospect' of the area around the Bernera Barracks, at Glen Elg, with a small map of the area inset in the upper right corner. The artist was John Henri Bastide, a Board of Ordnance surveyor and draughtsman, who usually worked in partnership with John Dumaresq. There are 'key' letters on the picture, however, with an 'Explanation' of the features to which they refer, in one corner. The letters also refer to features on the inset map, which has been done from a survey by 'Mr. Jelf', who was also working with Bastide at that time, at all four of the new Highland forts, Bernera, Inversnaid, Ruthven and Kiliwhimen.

This sheet shows a plan of the barracks in process of being built at Bernera, Glen Elg. Although there is no signature or date on the plan, the 'Board of Ordnance Register of Plans 1700-1800' lists it as being from Andrews Jelfe, in 1719. There is another contemporary plan of the Bernera barracks by Jelfe at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.03/06a. The original plans for the four Highland barrack forts, Bernera, Kiliwhimen, Inversnaid and Ruthven, were drawn up in 1717 by James Smith, who was the royal chief surveyor. There are two very similar contemporary plans of Bernera by John Henri Bastide, with whom Andrews Jelfe was working, at shelfmarks MS.1647.Z.03/05a and MS.1647.Z.03/05b. The overall view of Glen Elg, drawn by Bastide, at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.03/07a, was partly based on a survey by Jelfe.

This plan is part of the series of plans drawn up by the architect Andrews Jelfe, while strengthening and extending Edinburgh Castle in 1719. Jelfe was responsible for major reconstruction of many of the fortifications in Scotland in the year 1719, including, Dumbarton, Stirling and Fort William. He was also one of the people responsible for the building of the four Highland forts at Bernera, Inversnaid, Kiliwhimen and Ruthven, at this period. This plan and one of its companions (image 00002613), and the two copies on images 00002612 and 00002614, have been signed by Jelfe, although he may not have actually drawn them. Two of the plans, one of the copies, and an unsigned plan from this set, on image 00002670, were drawn and annotated by the same person, but the copy on image 00002612 has different handwriting. A set of five plans relating to these were drawn for Jelfe by Thomas Moore (who signed them), just prior to these, and are on images 00002654-2658. The plan shows three components of building work proposed for the church porch at Edinburgh Castle, including the new steps.

This beautifully executed book of hand drawn and hand coloured plans, appears to have had the function of an estate book, as on each page is given the area of the field or part of the grounds which the plan covers, along with details of its burns, springs etc. The final page gives the total acreage for the estate in both English and Scots measuement, and the value of the land if let to tenant farmers. The Content of all the Above Parks Acres 204 Roods 3 Perches 34 [Scottish] Acres 257 Roods 2 Perches 29 [English]'.
