Description:
The 1631 or later issue of the map of the north of Scotland ('Scotia septentrionalis') by Joannis Janssonius in his 'Atlas Minor'. Janssonius also produced a map of the rest of Scotland and of the same size (5'x7') and scale (c.42 Scots miles to the inch). Latitude is overestimated by almost two degrees, and longitude is most likely calculated from the Azores. There are further differences with Mercator's 1595 map, such as the notably more irregular coastlines; Loch Ness is enlarged and its mouth (and those of other lochs) is open to the sea; and there are fewer place names. Janssonius (1588-1664) was a brother-in-law of the sons of Jodocus Hondius (Jodocus II and Henricus).
