Description:
The sheet has four equal panels, each panel showing a plan, with elevations, sections and detailed 'Explanation' of each of the four Highland forts which were in the process of being built between 1718 and 1724 - Kiliwhimen, near Fort Augustus, Inversnaid, on Loch Lomond, Ruthven, near Kingussie, and Bernera, in Glen Elg. The 'Board of Ordnance Register of Plans 1700-1800' lists it as being a 'copy' from Andrews Jelfe, in 1719. The original, also listed in the Register as being from Jelfe, is at shelfmark MS.1648.Z.03/18b. Another version at shelfmark MS.1648.Z.03/18c lacks the 'Explanations' of the other two, and has the title of each panel in Jelfe's own hand.
