Description:
|
A Dutch map of Scotland without the north ('Scotia Meridionalis') made in 1628 by Joannis Janssonius. It was published in a new edition of 'Atlas Minor Gerardi Mercatoris' which ran to further editions until 1651. Based on Mercator's 1595 map but using new plates engraved by van den Keere and Goos, this map displays settlements, bodies of water, and hills. Unlike Mercator's map, dotted lines separate regions, some sites are relocated (e.g., Dunbar Castle), and Loch Lomond opens into the sea. In 1607 a similar map of Scotland was published by Hondius in the first 'Atlas Minor' but without the differences cited; however, Janssonius's map provides more detail than does Hondius's.
