Description
This map was published in London in 1673 by Richard Blome, in an atlas called Britannia, or A Geographical Description of the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland. It was engraved by R. Palmer based on the Mercator outline of Scotland of 1595. It is dedicated to James, Duke of Monmouth, illegitimate son of King Charles II. Monmouth must have seemed a useful patron. He had been appointed to the Privy Council in 1670, and in 1673 he was commanding the English troops in the Anglo- Dutch wars. After 1679, the map's dedication would have been less favourable as Monmouth became involved with those opposing the succession of James (II) as king after his brother Charles II. After an unsuccessful rebellion in 1685, Monmouth was executed.

Description
This coloured manuscript was drawn by William Boutcher in 1733. It shows a possible layout and key for elaborate gardens at the Grange, Peebles. It is elaborately drawn, partly in plan, partly as a bird's eye view, however, the perspective is odd. There are practical notes, one suggesting that a plantation should be moss 'where the divot (grass) won't grow'. A secondary note on the plan records that 'no pairt of this plan execute nor would xxx [word scored out] the Brute alter it though often .... to do it'. The Process includes a statement that William Boutcher (or Butcher) was employed to create the plan, an account showing cost of plans, and Major Cochran's oath stating that the plan by Boutcher is not agreeable and therefore useless. A plan drawn by William Adam was used in practice (see images 00001805-6).

Description
This particular version of these views and plan of Edinburgh has a somewhat complicated history. The plan and views shown here are substantially of early eighteenth century Edinburgh as originally engraved by Andrew Johnston between 1708 and 1714, who dedicated the whole to George Lockhart, Laird of Carnwath, and the MP for Edinburgh between 1708 and 1714. Johnston sold it at 'ye Golden Eagle in Old Round Court in ye Strand', London. The words 'From the Original of ye famous D. Witt' in the title, refer to Frederick de Wit (1610-1698), who in Amsterdam, between 1647 and 1690, engraved a plan of Edinburgh from an original draught done in 1647, at the behest of the Edinburgh Town Council, by James Gordon, Minister of Rothiemay. This engraving done by Andrew Johnston for George Lockhart uses James Gordon's plan, but has updated its features to early eighteenth century Edinburgh. The sheet also has three views of Edinburgh, not on Gordon's plan. However, this sheet has the imprint 'Printed for, and Sold by Tho. Millward & Bis. Dickinson at Inigo Jones Head next the Globe Tavern in Fleet Street', which means that it is the version engraved by John Bowles, who was publishing around the same time, and died in 1779. There is another copy of this edition of this map in images 0002233-2234, which is in bad condition, with pieces missing from both sides.

Description
In this Petition, Buchan asks 'that a new Commission may be issued, directed by some unbiassed Person, ... in case Disputes or Difficulties arise to him anent the Names of Places, (which from what has passed, I have too good reason to believe will happen) ... [and] that the Commissioner named, should be a Person who understands to act by the Help of a Compass, and Theodilet; without which, 'tis impossible to set, with Exactness, the Props in the Moss. The Sheriff was at a great Loss in this respect, and indeed had not a Theodilet with him; so that his Procedure behoved to be but a Sort of Guess-work, ...' (p.4).

Description
This map was made to illustrate proposals put forward and agreed for the settling the 'Debatable Land' - disputed land on the border between Scotland and England. Henry Bullock, who drew and signed the map, was subsequently Master Mason of the King's Works. For an explanation of the four proposed boundary lines see image 00003454.
