Description:
This coloured manuscript was drawn by William Boutcher in 1733. It shows a possible layout and key for elaborate gardens at the Grange, Peebles. It is elaborately drawn, partly in plan, partly as a bird's eye view, however, the perspective is odd. There are practical notes, one suggesting that a plantation should be moss 'where the divot (grass) won't grow'. A secondary note on the plan records that 'no pairt of this plan execute nor would xxx [word scored out] the Brute alter it though often .... to do it'. The Process includes a statement that William Boutcher (or Butcher) was employed to create the plan, an account showing cost of plans, and Major Cochran's oath stating that the plan by Boutcher is not agreeable and therefore useless. A plan drawn by William Adam was used in practice (see images 00001805-6).
