Description
This is a coloured sketch of the battery at Greenock, but shows the town only by the words 'town of greenock' written in ink, with no plan of the town. There are faint pencil notes in the upper portion of the sketch. It may or may not be part of the series of 7 sketches of batteries around Scotland, and their reports, done by William Gravatt, of the Royal Engineers, in 1795 (in images 00003194, 0003195-3196, 00003197, 00003198, 00003199, 00003200 and 00003202-3203). It is on the right hand side of the sheet of paper, so it is similar in format to the other reports, which had the sketch plan on the right hand side, and a brief report on the left hand side. In this, however, the report seems not to have been written.

Description
This is part of a series of 7 similar sketches and reports, the others being Arbroath, Dunbar, Montrose, Aberdeen, Peterhead and Banff, (3194, 3195/3196, 3197, 3198, 3199 and 3200). The Dunbar report is contained in a letter to Lord Adam Gordon, dated 'Edinburg June 1st 1795', which is signed 'Your Lordships Very obedient H. Servant W.G. Lt. R. Engrs', and has a pencil note 'William Gravatt' added at a later date. The other plans, except the Dunbar one, are fully coloured, and a note with this one indicates that it is an earlier draft of those sent to Lord Adam Gordon. It reads 'These are the Sketches there parts are nearly the same which Lord Adam had only these were the first ones'. A plan of Greenock battery at 3201 may be part of the same series, without its report.

Description
This is the title cartouche of a map of Scotland first printed in London in 1679 by Robert Greene and William Berry. This copy is a later issue. The fine workmanship, typical of the17th century's best engravers, can be seen in the modelling of the faces and in the flowing script. The figures flanking the cartouche are a historical source in their own right. Surviving examples of tools and weapons are often difficult to date so illustrations in prints and paintings are often helpful. To the left is a man holding a falchion, the single edged chopping sword of the North European infantry between the late 16th and 17th centuries. To the right stands a farmer with bound sheaves of barley and a sickle.

Description
Advertised in 1679 as a 'New Map of Scotland with the roads' this map was first printed in London by Robert Greene and William Berry. This edition, which bears Greene's name only, must date to between 1679 and 1689 when he died. In the late 17th century there was a growing demand for road maps with the introduction of the postal services and of the turnpike road system in England. Turnpike roads were not established in Scotland until the 18th century. Few roads are shown in the mountainous north and west. The main roads are in the south with a coastal route along the east coast. There would have been many tracks only passable on foot, riding, or with packhorses.

Subject Place
[Caulkerbush, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, Southwick House]
Description
This plan titled 'Part of the estate of Mains possessed by James Grosset' is undated but can be placed within the 18th century. It shows the estate lands of Southwick House (Mains) in Kirkcudbright. The land appears to be enclosed in a pattern of relatively small rectangular fields. A few such as 'new meadow' are named. An orchard is also marked and the size of the main property is suggested by the ground plan of a considerable range of buildings. There are a series of letters on the plan that must have related to a key, now missing, which would have given details of the estate. Roads and a number of farms on the estate are drawn.
