Description
A chart of the east coast of Scotland, from Coquet Island in Northumberland to Aberdeen. It is from Pieter Goos, 'The lighting colomne or sea-mirrour' (Amsterdam, 1662) which was first published in Dutch, in 1650.In fact, this map is based on a late sixteenth century chart by Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer, whose charts became so influential that in Britain they came to be known simply as 'waggoners'.Many of the finest 17th century coastal charts of Scotland were the work of Dutch mapmakers. This example was essentially a guide for pilots. It was engraved in Amsterdam by Goos. A chart of the east coast of Scotland, from Coquet Island in Northumberland to Aberdeen. Description
This detail of Parson James Gordon's map of Aberdeen shows the core of 'New' Aberdeen in 1661. It is a very valuable source for understanding the development of the town and its medieval origins. Excavations in Aberdeen since the 1970s suggest that the layout of the properties, the position of town gates and of major buildings and roads changed little between the 13th/14th century and 1661. Details of buildings must be treated with caution as the map was engraved in Holland. The medieval town extended between the castle (Castle Hill) and St. Nicholas Church, which lay outside the town gate. There were two market areas at Castle Street and Broad Street, although by 1661, the latter had been partly built over.

Description
This detail from the map of Aberdeen drawn by Parson Gordon of Rothiemay in 1661 illustrates the difficulties for shipping coming into Aberdeen harbour in the 17th century. Massive sand banks left only a narrow, shallow channel up to the town itself. As shown by Gordon, larger ships anchored at Torry and goods were carried to the town by smaller boats. Even these had to wait off Futty (Footdee) for the high tide. The separate fishing mooring is shown with handwritten annotations suggesting that the back edge of this bay is inaccurately drawn. Gordon would have pleased the town council by his careful inclusion of their 17th century harbour improvements such as the pier begun in 1607, the Packhouse or weigh house from 1634 and the quayhead extension. These and other works were essential to encourage foreign trade.
