Description
This detail from John Adair's map of Straithern (Strathearn) shows a plan of Ardoch (Airdoch) Roman camp, near Braco. The camp, which dates from the 1st-2nd centuries AD, was excavated in 1896-7 and can still be seen today. The drawing of a tombstone shows the memorial of Ammonius, a Roman soldier who served at Ardoch in the 1st century AD. The slab, found at Ardoch in the late 17th century, is one of few to have survived. It is now in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow. Details such as these reflect the growing interest in antiquities in the 17th and 18th centuries. Early drawings of sites are very important to archaeologists as many sites were destroyed by 18th century agricultural improvements.

[Dalkeith, Edinburgh, Lothian, Scotland]
Description
A manuscript map of Midlothian which forms part of a series of county surveys drawn by the cartographer John Adair in the early 1680s, possibly working for Sir Robert Sibbald in his ill-fated project to publish a new Scottish atlas. It concentrates on identifying settlements between the Rivers Almond and Esk and is characterised by detailed plans of Edinburgh, Leith, Dalkeith and Musselburgh. Several roads are delineated by dotted lines and six bridges cross the Water of Leith. Some Pentland Hills are named and the site of Rullion Green battlefield (1666) is marked. Unusually for a manuscript, the map has a dedication, in this case to the Earl of Lothian, and the crests of another fourteen of the local gentry.
