Description
A lengthy slagging match by Adair, insulting Slezer at many points, he calls Slezer 'ane illiterat stranger [who] cannot pretend to understand' the antiquities and natural history of Scotland. To amaze the country 'he hath gathered a big volume of scraps from many hands, most of them as unlearned as himself'. On the subject of Adair's sea voyages, he claims that Slezer understands 'no more of shiping or sea affairs than a sheepherd'. (P.G. Vasey, 'John Adair', 1998).

Description
This is possibly the first draft of three similar plans of the barracks being built at Kiliwhimen between 1718 and 1719. It indicates that some planned features, such as the guard house, bakehouse and two towers, may not be built unless 'the money answers', whereas on the plans at shelfmarks MS.1647.Z.03/10b, (copy at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.03/10a), and MS.1647.Z.03/10d, these features appear to have been built. The original plans for the four Highland barrack forts, Bernera, Kiliwhimen, Inversnaid and Ruthven, were drawn up in 1717 by James Smith, who was the royal chief surveyor, but were actually executed by John Bastide and Andrews Jelfe, and later John Romer, between 1718 and 1724.

Description
This map of the Lothians was published in Edinburgh in 1744 by John Elphinstone, based on the unpublished surveys of the outstanding Scottish surveyor John Adair (1660-1718). It was engraved by Thomas Smith. The merchant's name and the price appear at the bottom. The map originally cost 2s (shillings) plain and 2s 6d (2 shillings and six pennies) coloured. The maps, which were engraved on copper plates, were then printed. Colouring was done by hand. The detail is drawn more simply than on some earlier maps. Towns, for example, are shown in plan form rather than as three-dimensional symbols. There is considerable detail of offshore rocks and sand banks and the harbour works at Leith are clearly depicted.
