Description:
This map of the Lothians was published in Edinburgh in 1744 by John Elphinstone, based on the unpublished surveys of the outstanding Scottish surveyor John Adair (1660-1718). It was engraved by Thomas Smith. The merchant's name and the price appear at the bottom. The map originally cost 2s (shillings) plain and 2s 6d (2 shillings and six pennies) coloured. The maps, which were engraved on copper plates, were then printed. Colouring was done by hand. The detail is drawn more simply than on some earlier maps. Towns, for example, are shown in plan form rather than as three-dimensional symbols. There is considerable detail of offshore rocks and sand banks and the harbour works at Leith are clearly depicted.
