[A Plan of Fort George ...

Subject Category

Description
This sheet of sections accompanies the plan at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/51a, which shows the state of the work at Fort George, Ardersier, by 30 September 1756. While William Skinner was the chief engineer for this whole project, the provenance of both these particular unsigned sheets remains uncertain. According to a note pencilled on the accompanying plan at a later date, it was 'Recd of Mr Bogdani 23 May 1763', but whether that particular sheet originally accompanied this one, and whether these sheets are originals or copies, is also unclear. Neither the plan nor these sections is listed in the 'Board of Ordnance Register of Plans 1700-1800', or the War Office Schedule, but only in the National Library of Scotland Accession Inventory.

Description
This is the un-numbered sheet of sections accompanying the plan at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/45a (copy at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/45b), which details the progress of the building work at Fort George, Ardersier, by 1752. This sheet does not have an identifying number like the other four sections, but it shows sections through lines 9.10, 11.12 and 13.14. Although unsigned, the draughtsman was probably Charles Tarrant, as he did the other four sheets of sections that accompany the plan.

Description
This sheet of sections accompanies the plan at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/49a, which shows how far building works had progressed at Fort George, Ardersier, in 1754. It is unsigned and undated, but can be dated from its accompanying plan, and was probably drawn by Charles Tarrant, as he was the draughtsman of that plan, and of most of the other work at Fort George, Ardersier, at this period. William Skinner was the chief engineer on the project, which was his major professional work.

Description
There is an extensive note at the top of the sheet explaining the alterations which Talbot Edwards was putting forward as necessary to improve the defences of the castle. A profile accompanying this is at shelfmark MS.1649.Z.03/58c, signed by Talbot Edwards and dated November 1710. The original work, designed and built by Theodore Dury (at shelfmark MS.1649.Z.03/58b) had not been thought to be adequate by Major John O'Brien. The plan at shelfmark MS.1649.Z.03/58a shows the actual alterations which were carried out in 1710. This apparent quarrel is noted on several other plans, specifically those of Stirling and Dumbarton. This sheet has the stamp of the Inspector General of Fortifications, rather than that of the Board of Ordnance. It was handed down through the family of William Skinner, who was Chief Engineer for Scotland from 1746, and then of Great Britain, to his death in 1780, and was the architect of Fort George, Ardersier. It eventually came into the hands of his great-great-grandson Major Thomas Skinner (1804-1877), who wrote a provenance note on it when he passed it on to his own son, Lieutenant Monier Skinner, in 1872. Talbot Edwards married William Skinner's older sister, and brought him up after the death of their parents, and presumably passed these plans on to him.

Description
This sheet has the stamp of the Inspector General of Fortifications (I.G.F.), rather than the stamp of the Board of Ordnance. It was handed down through the family of William Skinner, who was Chief Engineer for Scotland from 1746, and then of Great Britain, to his death in 1780, and who was the architect of Fort George, Ardersier. It eventually came into the hands of his great-great-grandson Major Thomas Skinner (1804-1877), who wrote a provenance note on it when he passed it on to his own son, Lieutenant Monier Skinner, in 1872. One of the major designers involved in this plan originally was Talbot Edwards, who had married William Skinner's older sister, and brought him up after the death of their parents, and presumably passed these plans on to him. There is an extensive note in the panel at the bottom of the sheet, explaining the alterations which Talbot Edwards had carried out on work originally designed and built by Theodore Dury, and which had not been thought to be adequate by Major John O'Brien. This apparent quarrel is noted on several other plans, specifically from Stirling and Dumbarton. Dury's original design is at shelfmark MS.1649.Z.03/58b and Edwards' designs for the alterations is at shelfmark MS.1649.Z.03/58c.
