Description
This undated manuscript, probably from the mid 18th century, is a detailed and apparently accurate sketch of the area directly north of Loch Watten, Caithness. It shows the commonty of Lynegar, Brabster and Watten. Accompanying notes give details referring to letters on the map. A number of antiquities are shown, probably more in relation to the establishment of boundaries than for antiquarian interest. They include Neolithic and Bronze Age burial cairns which would have been prominent in the landscape and therefore useful landmarks. Land use is recorded, including areas cut for peat, grazing and arable. One area is marked as too wet for cattle. A mill and farms are shown, some named. Improvement appears to have begun as several new enclosures are noted.

Subject Place
[Bilston, Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland]
Description
This coloured plan was drawn by James Robertson in 1721. It has a scale with compasses above it. The key gives details of field names with areas given in acres (A), rods (R) and perches (P). This estate in Midlothian is typical of improved estates in the early 18th century. A number of fields from 3 to 29 acres have been enclosed, apparently with gated dykes. Three limestone quarries would have provided lime for improving land fertility. Trees have been planted along the boundaries and forming an avenue to the house. The mansion is drawn in elevation as a two-storied structure with adjacent outbuildings including a dovecote. A formal garden lies behind the house.

Description
This Dutch chart of the North Sea by Jacob Robijn was printed in 1683 and included in his 'Zee Atlas'. It is typical of the charts being produced in Amsterdam at that time, with fine engraving, ornate title cartouche (in this case depicting the fishing trade), rhomb lines and decorative ships. Contemporary hand colouring around the coasts enhances and clarifies the map making it easier to use. The radiating rhumb lines show the construction of the map with angles from a particular point being used for triangulation.

Description
Jacob Robijn produced this map of the North Sea in about 1683 and collected it with other charts in his 'Zee Atlas'. Used for navigation it includes anchorages, ports and depth information. The outlines are hand coloured, and it has a decorative title cartouche showing woodcutters. The Dutch were leading cartographers at this time and also had large merchant and naval fleets so they produced many sea charts, with up-to-date information. Areas less frequented by Dutch shipping are often more sketchily presented, with headlands being of chief interest; in this case note how generalised Shetland is in comparison with the north coast of Holland. Only coastal places are named, and these are engraved inland to leave room for information concerning sailing conditions around the coast.

Description
Published in the 'Zee Atlas' by Jacob Robijn in about 1683 this chart shows Ireland and the west coast of Britain including the Western Isles and Orkney. Soundings show the depth in fathoms, although this information only appears along the most frequented trade routes, i.e. the English Channel and the Bristol Channel, where it would be collected by sailors and passed on to the cartographers for use in compiling their next chart of the area. Coats of arms are depicted in the centre of each country, following a common style of the time. These are hand coloured, as are the coastal outlines. The map also has rhumb lines, and a small central compass rose.

Description
This manuscript plan of the western defences of Edinburgh Castle was drawn in 1735, and probably by John Romer. The key is detailed, noting which sections of wall and gun batteries were rebuilt in 1733 and 1734 and which sections were due to be rebuilt in 1735. The old wall line is shown as a dotted line. The reorganization of the western defences was aimed to straighten out curved sections of the wall which had proved dangerous in the 1715 Jacobite Rising. The sentry box drawn in the elevation was designed by John Romer.

Description
This map shows the town of Inverness, with particular emphasis on plans for a fortified barracks (later named Fort George) on Castle Hill. It is signed by Captain John Romer, who was engineer to the Board of Ordinance, and is dated 1728. Although the outlines and positions of buildings, walls and gardens are clear, the planned fortification is most prominent. It consisted mainly of a strong tower surrounded by bastions. The roads which are named are those leading to other military destinations, Killywhymen (Fort Augustus) and Ruthven being important bases in the Highlands. The Fort, which cost around 50,000 to build and maintain, fell after only two days resistance to Prince Charles' Jacobites on the 20th of February, 1746, who then demolished it with explosives.

It lacks the note about Dugal Campbell's letter from the original, (the original plan was previously copied by James Anderson, in 1799, Shelfmark MS.1645.Z.02/04b, with the note about Dugal Campbell's letter retained). It also lacks the Board of Ordnance reference number.

Description
This is a copy of Dugal Campbell's 1742 'Plan of the works on the entrance of the castle of Edinbo.', at shelfmark MS.1645.Z.02/04a, showing building works at the entrance of Edinburgh Castle, including the new walls. It was done in the Tower of London Drawing Room by Jabez Anderson, in 1799, and even includes a note from the original about a letter of Dugal Cambell's accompanying the plan. Another copy was made by John Sedley, in the Drawing Room in 1800 (at shelfmark MS.1645.Z.02/04c). The original plan is part of a set done by Dugal Campbell to show the progress of the improvements at the castle in the 1740's, (see shelfmark MS.1645.Z.02/5b, with a copy at shelfmark MS.1645.Z.02/5c, and a 1769 copy of a 1740 set of elevations at shelfmark MS.1645.Z.02/5a).

This sheet shows plans of two of the four Highland barracks built between 1718 and 1724, Kiliwhimen, near Fort Augustus, and Inversnaid. It also shows a plan for the powder magazine at Edinburgh Castle. The 'Board of Ordnance Register of Plans 1700-1800' lists it as being from John Romer, without a date or a named draughtsman. It is probably dated at 1723, as the next plan in the list and in the series, is a plan of the cistern at Kiliwhimen (at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.03/12a), also from John Romer, and that is dated 1723.

The original plans for the four Highland barrack forts, Bernera, Kiliwhimen, Inversnaid and Ruthven, were drawn up in 1717 by James Smith, who was the royal chief surveyor, but were actually executed by John Bastide and Andrew Jelfe, and then John Romer, between 1718 and 1724.
