Description
A small map of 'Scotia' by the obscure Dutch printer and publisher Barent Langenes from his 'Caert-Thresoor' of 1598. This atlas contained 169 similarly sized maps in Dutch. The map is situated with west at the top and includes important burghs, village, ferries and some long-forgotten places. It omits some which would normally be expected, such as Stirling, and compresses most areas of the country. Note the proximity of Edinburgh and Berwick, as well as the districts of 'Maria' and 'Marnia' in the Northeast, 'Wylertoune' in the Northwest, and the occasional hilltop. Langenes' 'Caert-Thressor' established the convention of miniature atlases. Further editions were published in 1599 and 1609; the map was also used in Bertius's atlas of 1600.

It shows a series of enclosed parks. The acreage of each is given in a marginal key. Part of the ground is coloured, but no explanation is given on the map. Several wells and drains are shown. One well is in a small park marked in the key (No2) as site of an old house and garden, clearly completely demolished. The road to Tranent and farm roads are also marked.

Description
This sheet shows a plan of Stirling Castle and the town of Stirling. Within the town, it shows the church, hospital, town house, horse, flesh and meal markets, as well as the main market place, with the houses of the Duke of Argyll and the 'late' Lord Mar. The gardens and orchards within the town are detailed, and outside the town the old gardens, now a park are detailed, with the 'place of execution' indicated by a gallows. Within the castle, the 'Great Hall', the 'Palace or Governour's House', the chapel, barracks and appartments, and 'New work and Barracks by Mr. Dury' and 'Battery to Flank the Bridge'. The probable original of this plan, done by John Laye, is at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/19a. There are also plans at shelfmarks MS.1646.Z.02/21a, MS.1646.Z.02/21b and MS.1646.Z.02/21c, which, although dated 1740 in their title boxes, appear to be almost exact copies of the 1725 plans, with minor details in the labelling that seem to be copying errors. Two of these are unsigned, and one is signed by August Chamberlaine, 1806. A plan entitled 'A Plan of the Town and Castle of Sterling 1725', in the British Library, KT L.94, also seems to be a version of these plans.

Description
A map from part of an engraved and printed mid 18th-century Pocket Atlas of Europe. The outline of Scotland appears to have been copied from a map based on the outline produced by Mercator's Atlas of 1595. The rather elongated form of Ireland looks very like that produced by Blome in 1673. The copying of earlier maps rather than using the most recent surveys often meant that atlases were not exactly 'state-of-the-art'. Pocket Atlases were a commercial venture generally produced as cheaply as possible.

Description
A map from part of an engraved and printed mid 18th century Pocket Atlas of Europe. It shows England and Wales with parts of southern Scotland and Ireland. England is divided into kingdoms thought to represent the Anglo-Saxon period, such as Mercia, the Kingdom of the South Saxons, etc. Hadrian's wall is named as 'the Pictes Wal'. This map is representative of the blossoming of popular antiquarian ideas during the 18th century. Although this example makes no attempt to show possible antiquities, the place names are clearly settlements deemed to be of Saxon date.

Description
A map from part of an engraved and printed mid-18th century Pocket Atlas of Europe. This shows Scotland including the Western Isles and Orkney Islands but not Shetland. The outline appears to be based on that printed in Blaeu's Atlas of 1654. Physical features such as the mountain ranges and the rivers are shown symbolically. Settlements are marked, but with very few in the north, west or islands. The position of some of the place names is inaccurate, for example Bog of Gicht (Gight) is shown far nearer the coast than it is.

Description
This map is from an edition of 'The shires of England and Wales described by Christopher Saxton ...', with the addition of some new maps, including this one of Scotland. It is a very close copy by Lea of Robert Gordon's Scotia Regnum, first published by Blaeu in 1654, the original names being indistinguishable from those in the Blaeu map, but there are several additional names in Lea's type-style.
