Description:
|
This sheet shows a plan of Stirling Castle and the town of Stirling, copied in 1806 by August Chamberlaine. Within the town, it shows the church, hospital, town house, horse, flesh and meal markets, as well as the main market place, with the houses of the Duke of Argyll and the 'late' Lord Mar. The gardens and orchards within the town are detailed, and outside the town the old gardens, now a park, are detailed, with the 'place of execution' indicated by a gallows. Within the castle, it shows the 'Great Hall', the 'Palace or Governour's House', the chapel, barracks and appartments, and 'New work and Barracks by Mr. Dury' and 'Battery to Flank the Bridge over the Forth'. There are two unsigned copies of this plan at shelfmarks MS.1646.Z.02/21a and MS.1646.Z.02/21c. There are two further copies at shelfmarks MS.1646.Z.02/19a and MS.1646.Z.02/19b, which, although dated 1725 in their title boxes, seem to have no differences from the 1740 plans, other than minor details in the labelling that seem to be copying errors. One plan is signed 'John Laye' and one is unsigned. A plan entitled 'A Plan of the Town and Castle of Sterling 1725', in the British Library, KT L.94, also seems to be a version of these plans.
