Description
A map of Peebles drawn by William Edgar in 1741. It shows landed estates and their grounds in some detail. Roads became more established at this period and main routes are shown and named on the map. Parish boundaries have been hand coloured. William Edgar was a surveyor. After the 1745 Jacobite rebellion, much of his mapping was done for the English military authorities. He is said to have died of a chill caught when surveying in Perthshire. The words 'R. Cooper sculp.' in bottom right corner show that this map was engraved by Richard Cooper the elder (1696-1764) who engraved many of the early and mid-18th century Scottish maps.

Description
This 1731 map of the Clyde estuary is the first detailed chart of any section of the western seaboard to be published by a native Scotsman. It covers the river up to Rutherglen and includes the Kintyre peninsula, Arran, Renfrewshire, Loch Lomond and the Ayrshire coast. Note the detail of shoals, anchorages, soundings and other features up-river from the Cumbraes, which contrasts sharply with the Ayrshire coastline, shown as one long curve. This chart is clearly designed to help navigation to the upper Clyde ports. Hill symbols are distributed over the map with little relation to reality. The map is based on John Adair's manuscript surveys and was engraved in Edinburgh by Richard Cooper, who worked on several of Adair's county surveys.

Description
This map of the Ardnamurchan area titled 'A plan of Loch Sunart' by Alexander Bruce was engraved by Richard Cooper in Edinburgh in 1733. It was reproduced in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' published by Sir Alexander Murray in 1740. Murray had discovered lead ore and bought the land around Sunart in 1723. The lead mining rights were leased to the York Buildings Company. The map is dedicated to General Wade, Commander in Chief of the army in Scotland, who was a partner in the company. A marginal drawing shows the mine buildings, including water wheels which were used to drive machines to crush the ore. Later, in the 1750s, water power was also used to drain the mines.

Description
A partial map to a particular purpose, Richard Cooper's map shows what he calls 'The Continent of Scotland' (the mainland and not the western or northern isles). This map was produced to accompany a history of the Church in Scotland from the Reformation to 1568. The regional boundary lines are not accurate and neither are the lines of latitude and longitude. And even on the east coast, Scotland's outline is incomplete.Although he produced several other maps, Cooper is not known to have been trained as a surveyor or map-maker. Description
This map entitled 'A map of the improved moss and improveable Bay of Kintra' was based on a survey by John Cowley in 1734. It was reproduced in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' published by Sir Alexander Murray in 1740. It shows part of Murray's land in Ardnamurchan, with details of his land drainage scheme consisting of two main drains between the river Shiel and Kintra Bay. An inset shows how this system could be adapted to other rivers. This drainage scheme is named on Alexander Bruce's map of Loch Sunart produced in 1733 and also reproduced in Murray's book. On that map there is an annotation that the drained Moss comprised 1,300 acres, a vast area of improved land.
