Description:
This 1731 map of the Clyde estuary is the first detailed chart of any section of the western seaboard to be published by a native Scotsman. It covers the river up to Rutherglen and includes the Kintyre peninsula, Arran, Renfrewshire, Loch Lomond and the Ayrshire coast. Note the detail of shoals, anchorages, soundings and other features up-river from the Cumbraes, which contrasts sharply with the Ayrshire coastline, shown as one long curve. This chart is clearly designed to help navigation to the upper Clyde ports. Hill symbols are distributed over the map with little relation to reality. The map is based on John Adair's manuscript surveys and was engraved in Edinburgh by Richard Cooper, who worked on several of Adair's county surveys.
