[Argyll and Bute, Scotland, Scotland - west coast, Western Isles]
Description
A small scale map of the west coast of Scotland from the Mull of Kintyre to Eddrachalis Bay, as well as the Inner and Outer Hebrides but not including the St Kilda archipelago. It is a key map locating seven large scale maps of individual islands, which followed it in the Atlas in which it was published. The map provides little detail by comparison with the maps of Islay, Jura, Mull, Skye, the Outer Hebrides and islands adjacent. The map was compiled from observation on the ground by Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. It was engraved in Amsterdam, for publication in Blaeu's 'Atlas Novus', first published in 1654.
