[Cromarty Firth, Dornoch Firth, Ross-shire, Scotland]
Description
A map of the part of Easter Ross between the Dornoch Firth and the Cromarty Firth, from Tarbat Ness, west to Edderton, Loch Achnacloich and Invergordon and with the adjacent shores of the Firths There is much settlement detail, with prominent likenesses of some houses, castles and ecclesiastical buildings. The map was catalogued by C.G. Cash as part of the manuscript maps compiled by Robert Gordon. In fact, it was compiled by Timothy Pont in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. The compass rose is a later addition, probably by Robert Gordon, who copied the contents of the map.

[Scotland, Shetland]
Description
This map of Shetland first appeared in 1711, in a book by Robert Monteith but published by Sir Robert Sibbald. It is described as 'done from the accurate observation of the most learned who lived in these isles'. The coastline can be followed reasonably and harbours are shown by anchor symbols. The towns of Lerwick and Scalloway are both shown, but there is little attempt to map other details inland. Shetland was first shown as a part of Scotland on Joan Blaeu's map of 1654, based on work by Robert Gordon and Timothy Pont. It was also drawn on various sea charts because the waters off both Orkney and Shetland were well known to the Dutch fishing boats.

Description
This map of the Roman Antonine wall, which extends between the Clyde and Forth, was first produced by Sibbald in 1707 in his book 'Historical Inquiries'. It was later reissued as part of a collection of treatises in 1739. Sir Robert Sibbald (1641-1722) was not only a geographer and antiquary, but also professor of medicine in Edinburgh, physician to Charles II, founder of the Royal College of Physicians, and helped establish the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. The Antonine wall attracted the attention of many mapmakers, including Timothy Pont (c.1564-c.1614) and Alexander Gordon (1692-1750). General William Roy (1726-1790), combining accurate survey with military understanding, printed a plan in his 'Military Antiquities of the Romans in North Britain' in 1793.
