Description
An outline map of the Howe of the Mearns compiled by Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661), at an unknown date after 1633. It extends from the River Dee in the north to the South Esk River in the south, locating only some twenty-five named places from Stonehaven to Brechin, mostly with prominent signs indicative of their significance in the mind of the author. The main source of the compilation is likely to be the observations of Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century.

Description
This map of the catchment of the River Nith, together with a small part of southeast Kirkcudbright, was compiled by Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661) and is dated May 1644. Apart from southeast Kirkcudbright, the map derives from a manuscript map of Nithsdale by Timothy Pont now in the National Library of Scotland and compiled from observations on the ground in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. This is, however, a reduction of Pont's map, both in overall size and in content, omitting some of Pont's named features. Furthermore, it includes fewer named features than the map entitled NITHIA published by Blaeu in his 'Atlas Novus' of 1654, which also derives from the extant Pont map.

Description
A large scale map of part of Buchan. Coverage extends from the North Ugie Water to the Ythan River, as far west as Fyvie. This part of the country was close to the home of the author, Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661). The draft appears to be unfinished. The coverage overlaps in part with a map in the National Library of Scotland compiled by Timothy Pont in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. Pont's observations on the ground may in part be the source of Gordon's map, but they are not the only source, since the map does contain original information.

Description
A map of the western part of the border lands between England and Scotland, compiled by Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661), at an unknown date after 1633. It includes the River Nith on the west, the upper reaches of the Tweed and Teviot in the north, the lower reaches of the Eden in the east and Cumbria west of Carlisle in the south. Settlement detail is confined to Ewesdale, Eskdale and northern Cumbria. The source of much of the Scottish coverage was probably the observations on the ground of Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century, but the origins of the coverage south of the border has not yet been established.

Description
A map of a part of the Borders, covering Teviotdale and the catchments of the Rule Water, Ale Water, Ettrick Water and Yarrow Water, and on the north bank of the River Tweed, between Coldstream and Traquair, the catchments of the Gala Water, Leader Water and Eden Water. The map was compiled by Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661), at an unknown date after 1633. The source of the compilation was the observations of Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. Another map by Gordon with similar coverage is extant in the National Library of Scotland, in a different collection (Advocates MS.15.1.1).

Description
A map of 'Scotia' by the Venetian Tommaso Porcacchi (1530-1585?). It appeared in his 'L'Isole Piu Famose del Mondo' of 1572 and in later editions between 1576 and 1686. The engraver was the artist Girolamo Porro from Padua, who was also renowned for his design of a flying machine. This is an improved outline when compared with other maps (e.g., George Lily's of 1546) though it does still include the mythical island of Hirtha. Several islands are also placed in new positions, such as Islay and Iona. Many areas show some resemblance to earlier Italian maps. The locations of Aberdeen, Stirling, Lothian and the islands of Orkney are among the most notable features of the map.

Description
In a letter dated 'Zetland, Jan. 31, 1743-4', Preston writes to Joseph Ames, FRS, that it is 'extremely difficult to make a good chart of the island, of which there is no chart extant worth naming. During my long stay, I have devoted some of my (otherwise) idle time in making observations and surveying the place, by which, and suitable information gained from the inhabitants, I have a sea chart, which I flatter myself may be of great use to other navigators, ...' Description
It would appear from the original War Office records, that this is a copy of one of Charles Tarrant's drawings from the set of plans, of which three others are at MS 1645 Z.02/14a, MS 1645 Z.02/14b and MS 1645 Z.02/14c. Those three are Charles Tarrant's originals, but the original for this one seems to be missing. This copy is undated.

Description
This anonymous sketch plan dating to the 18th century actually has two separate plans on the same sheet. Both show properties near Dunbar belonging to Captain Rig. Both are drawn to a named scale of one inch to 100 links. The upper plan is titled 'Peice of land near Dunbar and south of the Latch'. It shows the property outlined in blue and with measurements noted. The occupiers of neighbouring plots are named. The lower plan is titled 'Peice of land south of Underedge near Dunbar'. It appears never to have been finished as, although most of the drawing is in black ink, the property is outlined and the occupier named in pencil.

Description
This undated manuscript, probably from the mid 18th century, is a detailed and apparently accurate sketch of the area directly north of Loch Watten, Caithness. It shows the commonty of Lynegar, Brabster and Watten. Accompanying notes give details referring to letters on the map. A number of antiquities are shown, probably more in relation to the establishment of boundaries than for antiquarian interest. They include Neolithic and Bronze Age burial cairns which would have been prominent in the landscape and therefore useful landmarks. Land use is recorded, including areas cut for peat, grazing and arable. One area is marked as too wet for cattle. A mill and farms are shown, some named. Improvement appears to have begun as several new enclosures are noted.
