Description
Surveyed by John Adair, a mathematician from Edinburgh, by 1698, this chart was subsequently printed by Samuel Thornton in 1709 and published in an atlas. Adair surveyed most of Scotland and its coasts, with funding from the Scottish Parliament. Depicting the coast from St Abb's Head to the River Neath north of Montrose, it includes in some detail the 'Edinburgh Firth', now known as the Firth of Forth, and the River Tay as far as it is navigable, up to Perth. The map gives depths, and shows rocks and anchorages. Inland hills are shown where they are visible from sea and only coastal place names are given.

Description
This manuscript map by John Adair is centred on the town of Stirling and the flood-plain of the lower River Forth. It probably dates from 1685 when Adair was working for Sir Robert Sibbald, providing maps for an intended new atlas of Scotland. It identifies settlements, churches, bridges and mosses - in particular, Kincardine and Flanders Moss - but the information content is far less than on other Adair drafts. Like many maps of this period, relief is shown by the convention of drawing series of whale-backed mounds in parallel lines which dominate the map. The numbered grid which covers this sheet suggests that this may have been a final draft prepared for engraving.

Description
A manuscript map of south-west Scotland, covering an area west of the Clyde Valley and Dumfries. It was drawn by John Adair, probably in the mid-1680s as part of his contract to Sir Robert Sibbald's proposed atlas. The map is dominated by hill symbols giving little true impression of topography and the Renfrewshire coastline is seriously misaligned. Conversely, the plan of Glasgow shows its cathedral, main streets and bridge. Settlements and churches are marked but in no great detail. While the map is neatly drawn, its general nature suggests it is not based on any detailed survey. Comparison shows that Adair copied the Galloway coastline and features directly from the map by Timothy Pont published in the 1654 Blaeu atlas.

Description
This is a 'proof' copy from an engraved plate of a map of Clackmannanshire, as can be discerned from the visible engraver's lines. It is the work of John Adair (1660-1718). It shows an area lying south of the Ochils, depicted as a solid rampart of hills, to the River Forth at Kincardine. Settlements, mills, bridges and moor land are identified. A sketch of Stirling set at a right angle to the map shows the castle and its bridge across the Forth. This map was shown to the Privy Council in early 1681 as an example of Adair's work as part of an application for financial support but its style is more akin to the maps in the Blaeu atlas.

Description
This map of the coast of Scotland from John Adair's 'The description of the Sea-Coast and Islands of Scotland' (1703) was copied from a map by the Frenchman Nicolas de Nicolay, which had been published in 1583. Nicolay, Sieur d'Arfeville, (or 'Nicholas the Painter' as he was sometimes known), published the map in his French version of the pioneering Rutter (or pilot-book) of the Scottish pilot Alexander Lindesay. This Rutter and Chart celebrated the circumnavigation of Scotland by King James V in 1540, in which Lindesay had taken part. Adair (1660-1718), a Leith born map-maker renowned for his coastal charts, used this map in his book because, as he said, his own map of Scotland was still incomplete. This map of Scotland is from John Adair's 'The Description of the Sea-Coast and Islands of Scotland' (1703). It is a direct copy of a map by the Frenchman Nicolas de Nicolay published in 1583. It provided a much better outline of Scotland than any previous map and was more accurate than any of the maps of the following century. The chart accompanied Nicolay's French version of the rutter (or sailing directions) of the Scots pilot, Alexander Lyndsay produced for King James V's circumnavigation of Scotland in 1540. Its inclusion in the atlas is rather a mystery for the outline of the Hebrides is unchanged from Mercator's depiction of 1564, despite Adair's own surveying expedition to these islands in 1698.

Description
This manuscript map of East Lothian was drawn by John Adair in 1682. It is unique in being his only county survey which survives in two copies. The map depicts an area from Wallyford to Cockburnspath. Adair's familiarity with the county is manifest by the wealth of detail shown. Apart from plans of Haddington, and Dunbar, the policies of Yester and Seaton are particularly noticeable. Significant hills, such as Traprain (Dunpender) Law, are named and offshore islands are sketched. Adair probably prepared this map for incorporation in a new Scottish atlas proposed by Sir Robert Sibbald but which was never published. In the late 1730s, Richard Cooper engraved a series of maps in Edinburgh, based on Adair's surveys and including East Lothian.

Description
This chart shows the east coast from Sunderland Point to St. Abb's Head and is one of a series of five included in John Adair's 'The Description of the Sea-Coast and Islands of Scotland' published in Edinburgh in 1703. Adair's eye for detail is seen in his careful depiction of the sands around Holy Island and the marking of many soundings, rocks and bearing lines. It is the only atlas chart with a dedication, to Lord Polwarth, the Scottish Lord Chancellor. Comparison with the contemporary work of the Englishman, Greenvile Collins highlights Adair's superior draughtsmanship. James Clark, who worked at the Scottish Mint, engraved all five of the local charts and the quality of his fine line work enhances Adair's precision.

Description
This manuscript map of West Lothian is one of a series of county surveys made by the Scottish cartographer John Adair (1660-1718) and is thought to date from 1681. It concentrates on identifying features lying between the rivers Avon and Almond and is most detailed in showing settlement along the Forth coast. In particular, it provides a careful depiction of Linlithgow, its palace, park and loch. Other features noted include several mills, the various anchorages near Bo'ness and estate policies such as Kinneil. Careful scrutiny shows that many place-names have been re-written or corrected, suggesting subsequent editing and, certainly, Richard Cooper engraved a map of the county 'survey'd by Mr. J. Adair F.R.S.' in the late 1730s.
