[Badenyouchers, Banffshire, Edingight House, Fordyce, Knock Bog, Knock Hill, Scotland]
Description
This sketch map shows the area of peat moss around the Knock Hill, north east of Keith, in the parish of Fordyce, Banffshire. The Knock Hill is in the top right hand corner, and there are notes on each area of the moss indicating who cuts peat there, or in one case that 'Moss almost cast out'. The map is undated but has been assigned at least to the 18th century. In the entry for the parish of Fordyce, in Sir John Sinclair's 'Statistical Account' (1791 to 1799), it mentions the cutting of peat and the various areas around the Knock Hill where it has been carried on. Those people who have cut peats are 'Mr. L[C?]owri in Bogtown', Sir Robert Abercrombie, and the owners or tenants of the lands of Hillend and Badenyouchers Farm, and 'the Blacksmith'. There is also a note that one area of land was purchased from 'Mr. Innes of Edingight' by the Earl of Findlater. The Findlaters no longer resided in the parish, having sold their family seat of Durn, at the end of the 17th. century.

Description
This untitled manuscript map by John Adair of the area lying between the Ochil Hills and the Forth estuary was prepared as proof to the Privy Council of his cartographic ability. Although it delineates the turnings of the Forth, it is much less detailed in showing its riparian (river bank) features, which contrasts with the careful mapping of the Hillfoot settlements. Unfortunately, the sketch of Stirling which lies at right angles to the map has been damaged. Unlike his other manuscripts, towns, such as Alloa, are not shown in plan form but by diagrammatic sketches more akin to the work of Timothy Pont. The elegant compasses of the scale bar and empty banner title field suggest this may be a final draft.

Description
This image is of the book plates attached to the Glasgow University Library copy of John Adair's sea atlas, 'The Description of the Sea-Coast and Islands of Scotland' (1703). The upper label belongs to Victor Villiers, Earl of Jersey and shows the volume was once part of Osterley Park library. It is possible that the 4th Earl, a Lord of the Admiralty and member of the Society of Antiquaries, acquired the two Adair manuscript maps bound at the back of the volume after their being displayed in London in 1724. The lower plate is that of David Murray (1842-1928), a leading Glasgow lawyer and bibliographer closely connected with the University who donated his collection to its library in 1927.
