This figure shows the base of the brain with various cranial nerves connected to it. [Note: Vesalius's depiction of the cranial nerves is inaccurate. He recognised only 7 pairs ( there are in fact 12 pairs) no doubt, at least in part, because unfixed brain is very difficult to handle and dissect accurately].
