Description:
|
The two figures on this page show the pulmonary artery and the pulmonary vein / left atrium. It was not until after the discovery of the pulmonary transit of the blood (effectively by Realdus Columbus - but see Whitteridge for discussion and for Servetus's part in this), then Harvey's discovery of the circulation of the blood, that the names of these vessels connecting the lungs and heart were correctly assigned. We now know that the right heart pumps blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs whence it returns, now oxygenated, by the pulmonary vein(s) to the left heart, to be ejected again via the aorta into the gneral arterial circulation. None of this was known to Vesalius.
