Description:
This figure shows a portion of the aorta as it emerges from the heart. The vessel has been cut open and partially flattened to show its structure. The numbers 1,2,3 at the top are the cusps of the aortic valve - though Vesalius describes them just as 'the three membranes placed in front of the mouth of the artery'. Beside the cusps he notes the mouths of two coronary arteries marked E & D. The mouths of the vertebral arteries are shown, and the stumps of these vessels projecting from the aortic trunk, as are the origins of some other major arteries. The composite nature of the aortic wall, consisting of several layers, is shown by the shading.
