Description:
Complete skeleton, in profile, leaning on a plinth contemplating a skull. The text on the plinth 'Vivitur ingenio, caetera mortis erunt' means 'Genius will live on; all else will die'. The U-shaped bone at the left front corner of the plinth is the hyoid bone from the throat which is unsupported by other parts of the skeleton and the small objects at the right front are two of the (three) ossicles from the middle ear, the incus and the malleus. Of the incus and malleus Vesalius says respectively: 'q; a little bone shaped like an anvil or a molar tooth, * indeed we may compare to a little hammer or to the [shape of] the femoral bone. They were unknown to the ancient anatomists so it is not surprising that they have no names.' In spite of Vesalius's specific descriptions of the hyoid and the ossicles in the figure legend some commentators have speculated wildly that these little drawings are devices identifying the engraver of the plate!
