Description:
Complete skeleton, front view, resting on a spade. The skeleton is shown, Vesalius says 'as though it were articulated', but the wires that would hold together such a mounted specimen are not shown. The spade, which is probably wooden with a metal shoe, is presumably a symbol both of mortality and of the grave which this skeleton has not yet reached - as well as providing a visually-credible support for the pose.
