Description:
The anterior and posterior aspects of the trachea, and the major and minor bronchi. The thyroid cartilages, the epiglottis and the larynx are also shown at the top of the trachea. Aspera arteria - 'rough artery' was the usual renaissance latin name for the trachea - 'rough' because of the ridges produced by its cartilagenous rings - though arteria tracheia / trachia, which has the same meaning, was also used. In Galenic anatomy and physiology the arteries were believed to contain air (hence the name 'arteria') as well as blood but the 'rough artery' was singular in containing only air. Vesalius knew no more than Galen in this respect.
