Description:
This figure shows details of the chain of ossicles from the middle ear. From the legend: L & M are anterior and posterior views repsectively of the malleus, and N & O the corresponding views of the incus. P & Q show the malleus and incus articulating as they do in the ear, again viewed from in front and behind. Vesalius does not mention the third of the ossicles, the stapes, which articulates with the incus and transmits the sound pressure to the cochlea of the inner ear. Presumably he had not seen it (it is very small and deep in the cavity).
