Description:
|
This plate is the only known contemporary portrait of the author, Andreas Vesalius. The same image is used in Vesalius's China Root Letter (1546) and in the second edition of the Fabrica (1555). Space does not permit a discussion of the symbolic significance of the partially dissected arm of the apparently standing more-than-lifesize cadaver, or of the text on the scroll lying on the table. For some more information see Saunders & O'Malley.
