Description:
One of 6 broadsides, known collectively as the Tabulae Anatomicae Sex. This was designed by Jan Stefan van Calcar, 1499-1546/50, using the skeleton that Vesalius had constructed for the use of his students. This sheet is dated 1538; on the shield, propped against the tree trunk, is written: "Printed at Venice by B. Vitali, Venetian, at the expense of Jan Stefan van Calcar. For sale in the shop of D. Bernardus. In the year 1538." Along the bottom of the sheet are privileges from the Pope, the Emperor and the Venetian Senate, prohibiting others from printing or selling these plates "on the pain of the most severe penalties". See Singer & Rabin, 1946, for details of the meanings of the labels and further information.
