Description:
One of 6 broadsides, known collectively as the Tabulae Anatomicae Sex. Vesalius himself designed the anatomical illustrations on this sheet. The following is summarised from Singer & Rabin, 1946, qv. The Hebrew characters spell HA-NABHUBH and not HA-ORTI. The names printed in Hebrew characters have been erroneously exchanged between Tabulae II and III. However, HA-ORTI is appropriate to aorta. See also title to Tabula II. The description of the function of the aorta was the standard one before the discovery of the circulation of the blood. Its expansion and contraction were believed to be active; they are, in fact, produced by the ejection of blood into the aorta by contraction of the left ventricle of the heart.
