Description:
|
Figure 15 is an illustration of the pituitary gland and shows how, according to Galen, phlegm passed to the gland from the brain and thence to the nasal cavities. Figure 16 shows the exposed pituitary gland with the internal carotid arteries and their branches. In fact, the arteries are an innacurate picture of the arterial anatomosis that would later be accurately described by Willis (the Circle of Willis). Figure 17 shows the rete mirabile found in the ox and the sheep (and other mammals) but not in Man (though Galen described it as human also - see note on the original, record 410, Vesalius 1543 p. 621), and figure 18 is a diagram of the infundibulum and pituitary gland. They are ultimately derived from pages 620 and 621 of Vesalius 1543.
