Description:
This map shows the lands and house of John Erskine, Earl of Mar. It is part of a book of plans, and was drawn by Mar himself, who had extensive plans for remodelling not only his house and estate, but also the town of Alloa. He spent the last years of his exile in France, after the failure of the 1715 Stuart Rising, drawing up these plans. The 'Explanation' in the top left hand corner indicates not only the usual features of the estate such as 'the Hous', 'Kitchin & Fruit Garden' and 'Orchard', they also list the 'walks' and their vistas in detail, such as 'walks pointing on Elphington house, 2 milles distance', 'walk pointing on Stirling Bridge 4 milles distance', 'walk on Alloa, Ferry', 'walk, on Carnock 3 mills distance', 'visto, on Stirling Castle & Clackmanan house'. These features were becoming very important to landowners in the eighteenth century. It also shows the town of Alloa, with its harbour 'Capable to receive a Shipe of 300 Tons', the village of Parkmill, and the 'Coalpitt & waterwork of Clackmanan'. There are vignettes of sailing ships on the river and in the harbour. Notations on the map record plans to buy land from neighbouring estates and the agricultural use of land. Notes in the 'Explanation' box and notes on the map record hydro-engineering features such as 'A wett & Dry Dock for Ships wt. two Slouses One for the fresh water & the other for the Salt', the water being drained from the coalmine, 'Hilton loch, to be a reservour for water', and more usual features as 'Ponds of running water for ffowl & ffish', and the mill dams. Also noted are old and new roads and streets, and 'the Road to Clackmanan & Edenbrugh'. Two other notes record 'A Bolwinggreen surrounded on three sides wt. woodwork' and 'To be sheep pature and goff field'.
