Description:
|
This fully coloured map shows the area around Floors Castle, on the west bank of the Tweed, just above the town of Kelso. The map also takes in the River Teviot, which enters the Tweed at Kelso, and the land between the two rivers. The purpose of the map seems to be to evaluate the land belonging to the Duke of Roxburghe, which has been enclosed. In a red-bordered box, in the bottom left hand corner, there is a list of the fields and islands belonging to Roxburghe, with their acreage in both Scots and English measure. In a cartouche in the design of a red-bordered scroll, there is a list of notable features in the area, which have been marked on the map by letters. This includes not only the castle of Floors itself, but also the town of Kelso, the roads to Roxburgh, Stichill and Nenthorn, and places where views of Smailholm Tower and Hume Castle may be obtained, with two small vignettes of these features. John Ker, the 5th Earl and 1st. Duke of Roxburghe, was responsible for rebuilding the ancestral home at Floors in contemporary style, in 1721, for which he commissioned William Adam. This map was drawn fifteen years later. The present-day Floors is the William Adam building, with a few 19th century embellishments. In the scroll listing the features of the area is the note 'Ruins of the ancient Castle of Roxburghe which was Demolished in the Year 1460'. In 1460, James II of Scotland was killed at Roxburgh castle, when the cannon he was inspecting blew up, during a siege by the English armies.
