Description:
This map concerns the proposed re-routing of the road from Inveresk (then in Midlothian, now in East Lothian) to the coalmines at Coalpits, just east of Dalkeith. The original road runs entirely through the property of Sir Robert Dickson of Carberry, whereas the proposed route of the new road would take it on to the lands of the Duke of Buccleuch. The map is undated, but it has to be post 1731, as it names 'the Duke' of Buccleuch, and Ann was hereditary Duchess of Buccleugh until 1731. It must have been drawn up in the time of either Francis, 2nd. Duke of Buccleugh (1694-1751), or Henry, 3rd. Duke (1746-1812. It has to be prior to 1795, because according to the first 'Statistical Account' (see reference), Sir Robert Dickson of Carberry had died when the Inveresk entry was written, that volume being published in 1795.
