Description:
|
This particular version of these views and plan of Edinburgh has a somewhat complicated history. The plan and views shown here are substantially of early eighteenth century Edinburgh as originally engraved by Andrew Johnston between 1708 and 1714, who dedicated the whole to George Lockhart, Laird of Carnwath, and the MP for Edinburgh between 1708 and 1714. Johnston sold it at 'ye Golden Eagle in Old Round Court in ye Strand', London. The words 'From the Original of ye famous D. Witt' in the title, refer to Frederick de Wit (1610-1698), who in Amsterdam, between 1647 and 1690, engraved a plan of Edinburgh from an original draught done in 1647, at the behest of the Edinburgh Town Council, by James Gordon, Minister of Rothiemay. This engraving done by Andrew Johnston for George Lockhart uses James Gordon's plan, but has updated its features to early eighteenth century Edinburgh. The sheet also has three views of Edinburgh, not on Gordon's plan. However, this sheet has the imprint 'Printed for, and Sold by Tho. Millward & Bis. Dickinson at Inigo Jones Head next the Globe Tavern in Fleet Street', which means that it is the version engraved by John Bowles, who was publishing around the same time, and died in 1779. There is another copy of this edition of this map in images 0002233-2234, which is in bad condition, with pieces missing from both sides.
