Description:
This map showing the properties in and around the town of Auchencrow, in Berwickshire, is sketched in brown ink, and heavily annotated. It has been torn down the middle and at the sides, so that some text is missing. It also marks adjoining properties held by Wedderburn, Swansfield, West Reston and Greenhead. Along the main street of the town, each property is numbered and labelled with the names of either the landowner, or the tenant/lessee. Outside the town, some of the fields are also given numbers, some have letters, and some have both. The whole is explained in the copious 'References to the Sketch of the Easter Division of Auchincrow Territory' in the top right hand side of the sheet, and in 'References to the Sketch of the Wester Division of Auchincrow Territory' on the bottom left hand side. The main landholder seems to have been 'Wedderburn', although it is not clear whether this is the name of a family, or of another settlement. Many of the properties in the town are 'Held off Weddn', and there is a note that 'Weddn yards' are 'now part of Auchincrow Mains Farme Lett to mr Logan'. Even the landowners Margaret Fair, of Fairlaw, George Hood, of Sunnyside and William Bogue, of Greenburn, seem to have held some of their property 'off Weddn'. It is interesting to note that William Bogue is twice referred to as 'now in America'. The map is undated but has been assigned at least to the 18th century. In the entry for the parish of Coldingham in Sir John Sinclair's 'Statistical Account' (1791 to 1799), we find 'The Crown is patron', followed by the information that very few of the landowners live in the parish any longer, and many have sold their properties 'within these 40 years', which seems to relate to the situation noted on this map. Of Auchencrow itself, 'there were 3 considerable villages besides the town of Coldingham, viz. Renton, Auchencraw, and the 2 Prestons; but since that, the heritors have built good farmsteadings upon the most centrical parts of their outfields. Hence ... Auchencraw and West Preston have dwindled to less than half of what they were before that period.'
