Description:
|
This sketch map shows the area of peat moss around the Knock Hill, north east of Keith, in the parish of Fordyce, Banffshire. The Knock Hill is in the top right hand corner, and there are notes on each area of the moss indicating who cuts peat there, or in one case that 'Moss almost cast out'. The map is undated but has been assigned at least to the 18th century. In the entry for the parish of Fordyce, in Sir John Sinclair's 'Statistical Account' (1791 to 1799), it mentions the cutting of peat and the various areas around the Knock Hill where it has been carried on. Those people who have cut peats are 'Mr. L[C?]owri in Bogtown', Sir Robert Abercrombie, and the owners or tenants of the lands of Hillend and Badenyouchers Farm, and 'the Blacksmith'. There is also a note that one area of land was purchased from 'Mr. Innes of Edingight' by the Earl of Findlater. The Findlaters no longer resided in the parish, having sold their family seat of Durn, at the end of the 17th. century.
