Description:
This plan shows the meadows in the Canonmills area of Edinburgh in 1789. The meadow is shown divided into nine arable fields belonging to three different proprietors, Mr McDowal, Alexander Leslie, and James Inglis, with different colouring for each proprietor's land. The arable land was surrounded by a wide grassy border, and drains extended around the meadow on both sides. An extensive key, enclosed in a box, gives the area of each field, the grassy areas and drains. A pencil note has added 'Mr McNaughton's house'. On the verso is the title and date, with the note 'Measurement of piece of Ground North side of Meadow within the Hedge', and the area of an unlet piece of ground, and a piece let to 'Robt. Nesbit'.
