Description:
|
This sketch showing the planned grounds leading up to the main houseat Mavisbank House, Loanhead, would probably be drawn somewhere between 1720 and 1727. There is no date on the sketch, but the building of the house itself was from 1723 to 1727. It is known that William Adam designed and built the house for the 2nd. Baronet of Penicuik, Sir John Clerk, who lived between 1676 and 1755, but there is nothing to indicate that he actually drew this plan. Sir John Clerk himself was a designer and architect, as he is responsible for the new Penicuik House of 1761. There is another part of the plans on image 00002139, showing the plans for the inner court of the main house. There is also a map of the grounds at Mavisbank House from 1697, on image 00002251.
