Description:
|
The map was originally drawn up during the Bishops' Wars when there were plans for Strafford's Irish army to invade Scotland. This invasion did not materialise, but the idea was used again in 1644 when Antrim's Irish brigade was sent to aid Montrose, invading Argyll. Montrose's campaign utilised the ancient clan conflict between the MacDonalds and the Campbells, whose chief, the Earl of Argyll, was a leading covenanter. The basis of the map is an accurate survey, but it has been overlaid with notes highlighting the geographical and political nature of the region. Argyll's strong points are noted on the map, including his galleys. Potential aids to an attack on the Campbell lands are also noted. 'Magrigories hilanders' appear in various places. The MacGregors, as outlaws dispossessed of their lands, and as Catholics, would be a natural ally against the Campbells. The lands of the royalist peers Hamilton and Lennox are also marked.
