Description:
This sheet has the stamp of the Inspector of Government Fortifications, rather than the stamp of the Board of Ordnance, and appears at some point to have been in the hands of the family of William Skinner, who was Chief Engineer for Scotland from 1746, and then of Great Britain, to his death in 1780, and was the architect of Fort George, Ardersier. This sheet is divided into three parts. The larger, upper panel contains a plan of Dumbarton Castle and its situation on the Rock of Dumbarton, but appears to be unfinished as the code letters and their correspomding list of references have not been added. The lower third of the sheet is divided into two panels, both containing views of the castle and rock from the south, across the Firth of Clyde.
