Description:
There is a plan at shelfmark MS.1649.Z.03/58a, which records that Major John O'Brien took exception to Theodore Dury's work as shown here, and that Talbot Edwards, the Second Engineer, was asked to improve on it. This quarrel seems to extend to works at Stirling and Dumbarton also. Talbot Edwards' design for the improvements is at shelfmark MS.1649.Z.03/58c. This sheet has the stamp of the Inspector General of Fortifications, rather than that of the Board of Ordnance. It was handed down through the family of William Skinner, who was Chief Engineer for Scotland from 1746, and then of Great Britain, to his death in 1780, and who was the architect of Fort George, Ardersier. It eventually came into the hands of his great-great-grandson Major Thomas Skinner (1804-1877), who wrote a provenance note on it when he passed it on to his own son, Lieutenant Monier Skinner, in 1872. Talbot Edwards, who was responsible for the alterations to the work done by Dury, married William Skinner's older sister, and brought him up after the death of their parents, and presumably passed these plans on to him.
