Description:
|
This is possibly the first draft of three similar plans of the barracks being built at Kiliwhimen between 1718 and 1719. It indicates that some planned features, such as the guard house, bakehouse and two towers, may not be built unless 'the money answers', whereas on the plans at shelfmarks MS.1647.Z.03/10b, (copy at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.03/10a), and MS.1647.Z.03/10d, these features appear to have been built. The original plans for the four Highland barrack forts, Bernera, Kiliwhimen, Inversnaid and Ruthven, were drawn up in 1717 by James Smith, who was the royal chief surveyor, but were actually executed by John Bastide and Andrews Jelfe, and later John Romer, between 1718 and 1724.
