Jelfe, Andrews (active 1704-1759)

Surveyor
Date:
1719
Description:
This map, and its contemporary copy at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.03/09b, are listed in the 'Board of Ordnance Register of Plans 1700-1800' as being from 'Mr. Jelfe'. They bear a strong resemblance to the maps surveyed and drawn by John Henri Bastide and John Dumaresq, in 1718 (at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.03/08a and contemporary copy at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.03/08b). They perhaps derive from them, or from the same survey, since Jelfe worked with Bastide and Dumaresq on the four new Highland forts of Kiliwhimen, Bernera, Ruthven and Inversnaid, which were built between 1718 and 1724.
