Description:
|
This is Lewis Marcell's 1746 plan for a fort to replace the Fort George which had been on the Inverness Castle site, and was destroyed by the army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1746, just before Culloden (see Charles Tarrant's details of the destruction at shelfmarks MS.1646.Z.02/36a and MS.1646.Z.02/37a). This plan is accompanied by 10 sheets of sections at shelfmarks MS.1647.Z.02/79b, MS.1647.Z.02/79c, MS.1647.Z.02/80a, MS.1647.Z.02/80b, MS.1647.Z.02/81a, MS.1647.Z.02/81b, MS.1647.Z.02/81c, MS.1647.Z.02/81d, MS.1647.Z.02/81e and MS.1647.Z.02/83b. Two sets of plans for a new Fort George at Inverness were drawn up, using the site of the old Cromwellian fort, known as Oliver's Fort (see Louis Petit's map at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.02/78a), this set by Marcell, and a set by William Skinner. In the event, the Oliver's Fort site was rejected, after a claim of compensation from the town of Inverness for the loss of use of their harbour, and the new Fort George was built at Ardersier Point, to another set of designs by William Skinner (see plans and sections from shelfmarks MS.1646.Z.02/39 to MS.1646.Z.02/60).
