Description:
This sheet shows the plans, with some elevations and sections of several parts of Dumbarton Castle in 1719. According to the 'Board of Ordnance Register of Plans 1700-1800', it was received from 'Mr. Jelfe' in 1719, but no draughtsman is listed. However, as the 1934 War Office Schedule notes 'The draughtsman who prepared this survey also made sheets of drawings of the buildings at Edinburgh and Stirling Castles', and from the style of this sheet compared with the 1719 plans of Edinburgh Castle at shelfmarks MS.1645.Z.02/01a, MS.1645.Z.02/01b, MS.1645.Z.02/01c, MS.1645.Z.02/01d and MS.1645.Z.02/01e, and of Stirling Castle at shelfmarks MS.1646.Z.02/18a, MS.1646.Z.02/18b, MS.1646.Z.02/18c and MS.1646.Z.02/18d, for which Andrews Jelfe was the architect, the draughtsman is probably Thomas Moore. (Compare also the 1719 plans of Fort William at shelfmarks MS.1646.Z.02/26a and MS.1646.Z.02/26c).
