Description:
|
This plan shows the destruction caused to Fort George, Inverness, by the Jacobite army in 1746, when they mined the fort, on their return north, shortly before Culloden. It was surveyed and drawn by Charles Tarrant, and signed by William Skinner, the Chief Engineer for the Board of Ordnance. It shows the fall of the stones of the walls and buildings and the spread of the demolition in detail. The 'Explanation' includes such descriptions as 'The Govrs. House intirely in Ruins', 'Barracks for Soldiers, the Walls ruin'd, the Roofs and Floors Burnt', 'Ruins of the Chappel', and 'Walls of the Rampart which is Crack'd & Settl'd in several Parts'. A sheet of accompanying sections is at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/37a (with a copy at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/37b). A copy of this plan, done by G.D. Burr in 1808, is at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/36b.
