This is the companion to the plan at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/36a (which has a 19th century copy at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/36b). It show the sections and elevations of the destruction at Fort George, Inverness, after the Jacobite attack in 1746, through the line from the entrance of the fort to the Governor's house, and the line from the castle to the soldiers' barracks. It was surveyed and drawn by Charles Tarrant, and signed by William Skinner, the Chief Engineer for the Board of Ordnance. As a result of the destruction, the decision was taken not to attempt to repair this site, but to build a completely new Fort George. The initial proposals by Lewis Marcell (see plan at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.02/83a, and associated sections) and William Skinner, were for the site of the old Cromwellian fort, known as Oliver's Fort (see Louis Petit's map at shelfmark MS.1647.Z.02/78a), but eventually Skinner's second proposals for the site at Ardersier Point (see plans and sections from shelfmarks MS.1646.Z.02/39 to MS.1646.Z.02/60) were accepted.
